In Spain public tranportation works quite well, specially in metropolitan areas where trainees are living. In all cities there's public bus service and main ones also have metro and street-car service.

Probably during your stage here you'll travel around Spain, in that case the useful way to move around is the train or bus; the spanish train service is managed by Renfe, for bus service there're many companies depending on each area, probably you should ask on your local station.

Another option to consider to travel around Spain or Europe would be by air, many low cost companies offer cheap connections to spanish or european destinations, the main ones for Spain to Spain and Spain to Europe flights are Vueling, Clickair, and Air Nostrum. As a non-low cost alternatives you should know: Iberia, Spanair and Air Europa.
